Suddenly Fred heard a twig snap behind him, and he almost jumped out of
his skin. He
whirled round, but it was only the woman, who had regained consciousness
and had walked
up behind him. "Sorry, Fred," she said. "Did I make you jump? I don't
suppose you
have a spare sword, by any chance? I don't feel properly dressed without
one." "No, I'm
afraid not," said Fred. "Er, who are you, exactly? I think you said your
name
was Astra when I first found you." The woman's brow furrowed in
puzzlement. "You must
be under some enchantment of the dragon if you don't know me," she
said. "I am Princess
Astra of Aqualaria, like you on a quest to destroy the dragon. I fell into
its clutches
until you found and rescued me. Then we continued the quest together,
until we became
separated."
Fred remembered none of this, though he had of course heard of the famous warrior princess from Aqualaria. Perhaps this woman really was Astra, and her story was true. After all, she seemed to know who he was. On the other hand, perhaps she was suffering from delusions induced in her by the dragon. She might even be a tool of the dragon, sent to lure him to his doom.
