Escorted by guards, and with their hands tied in front of them, Fred and
Astra were taken through a series of passages, until they arrived in a
large and very
ornately furnished room. Facing them, sitting on a cushion on a black
marble
throne that brought his eyes to level with their own, was the Monkey.
Standing next to the throne was Mendo. "Kneel before His Holiness, the
Immortal
Monkey!" Mendo ordered them. When it looked as though Fred and Astra might
not comply, they were roughly pushed to their knees by the guards.
"Now we shall begin," the Monkey said. "You are accused of blasphemy. How do you plead?" Fred and Astra remained silent, having agreed between themselves that they would not co-operate in what they expected to be a mockery of a trial. The Monkey bent down to address a scribe sitting on a stool by the foot of the throne. "Enter a plea of 'Not guilty'," he told him. The scribe began writing on a parchment with his quill pen. The Monkey turned to Mendo. "You say you heard the blasphemy yourself? What did they say?" "Your Holiness, the man - from the far distant land of Allaria, and who calls himself Fred - suggested that you could not really be a monkey. He seemed to think that a monkey could not be our king and god. The woman - whose name is Astra and who comes from the even more distant land of Aqualaria - did not contradict him. Indeed, I saw her nod her agreement." "Do you deny this?" the Monkey asked them. Again Fred and Astra remained silent. "Very well," the Monkey said. "Then I have no alternative but to find you guilty. Ordinarily the sentence would be death. However, I have in mind that you come from far away, and so might have some excuse for your failure to believe in me. Accordingly, I shall be merciful. You are sentenced to:
