As Fred and Astra sat together, waiting for the dawn, Fred thought about
his
frightening dream. Though he no longer had his soul, did he still retain a
link to
it which only became evident whilst he slept? Was what he had experienced
what it was like to be his disembodied soul? He hoped he wouldn't have the
same experience every night. But perhaps the link would weaken over time.
If
it did, what would that mean for him, though? Would he become a different -
presumably a worse - person? And another worry: without Fred's body to
provide
sensory input, was there a
risk that his soul might go mad? If so, what would that mean for Fred, when
he had it returned to him after a year and a day?
"You're very quiet," Astra said. "What are you thinking?" But as Fred was considering how best to reply, she put her finger to her lips and whispered: "Ssh!" Fred listened for whatever it was that Astra had managed to hear above the howl of the wind. (Fortunately the plateau was sheltered by the mountainside from the worst of that wind, or their night would not have been so comparatively comfortable.) Then he heard a stone go falling down the slope, disturbed by someone (or something) travelling along the path. Fred could not tell whether whoever it was was descending the path from higher up the mountain or was climbing it from below. Either way, it seemed as though they must reach the plateau very soon. And when they did so, they would be bound to see Fred and Astra by the light of the full moon, which was in such a position that it cast no shadows that might have provided them with concealment. Astra picked up her sword (or, more strictly, Fred's sword). [55] Velus, who was awake now, gave a low growl. Then the head of their visitor (who was ascending from below) came into view, swiftly followed by the rest of their body.
