Briefing Alfredo

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 18523

Fred had been a little concerned that the ranger appeared to be well on in years - in his sixties by the look of him. However the lightning speed with which the coins disappeared from Fred's palm and were transferred to Alfredo's purse showed that the ranger still had the rapidity of reaction of a much younger man.

"That will suffice to hire me for ten days," Alfredo said. Actually his usual rate was only two gold pieces a day, but this stranger obviously had more money than sense. Knowing that his clients usually wanted to keep their business private, he shooed the boys out of his hut, and closed and barred the door, before he went on: "Now, what exactly can I do for you, sir knight?" (For though Fred might look scruffy, his armour and his refined accent indicated his true status.)

Fred quickly described how his companions had disappeared overnight, the strange monkey and/or man who had appeared at his bedroom door, and the peculiar reaction of the innkeeper to the word "monkey". "So what do you think?" he finished.

"It is too early to say. You haven't told me anything about your three companions yet. What manner of people are they?"

Fred decided it might be wiser not to reveal Cederik's and Astra's true identities. The ranger did not need to know who they were, and until Emry could be overthrown the fewer who knew their true identities the better. "All three wear golden helms and ceremonial ring mail in silver, decorated with gems, and carry swords. [14900] Well, not in their bedrooms they weren't, I suppose, but you know what I mean. The woman stands about six feet tall, is athletic yet at the same time beautiful, and she has long red hair. She is a notable warrior from Aqualaria. One of the men is middle-aged, but fit and good-looking, and having a commanding presence. The other is a not particularly distinguished teenage boy."

"I don't know yet whether the motive was simple theft - the armour that your friends were wearing must have been worth a fortune, going by your description - or something more. But whoever could abduct three people as formidable as you have described, seemingly leaving no trace, must be powerful indeed...

  1. "Tracking them down will be quite a challenge."
  2. "It sounds far too dangerous for an old man like me. You can have your gold pieces back."
