The plateau was a very pretty place, with blue and white alpine flowers
set off by
the green grass. On three sides, the ground continued to fall away.
On the fourth was the mountain they had descended. Velus, who was
the only one of the three who could sense
the temperature as it really was, knew that it was - if not exactly warm -
far more
comfortable than it had been higher up the mountain.
Astra set Velus down, to his disappointment. He considered keeling over, in the hope that she would pick him up again, but decided that it might be pushing his luck. "This place would be perfect if we only had something to eat," Fred said. "I lost my pack in that snowdrift I landed in. It was too cold up there to waste time searching for it." "It will be getting dark soon, and we don't want to get caught on the mountain-side when that happens," Astra said. "So I think we had better spend the night here, and put up with going hungry. At least there's a stream just over there that we can drink from."
