"Jim, I don't know enough about the Vulcan brain and nervous system to be able to suggest any medical procedure, beyond the injection I just gave him. And that only contained nutrients. Since he can't eat or drink in this condition, it's the only way to keep his strength up. His metabolism is slower now he's unconscious, but he still needs some nourishment. If he continues like this, I'll have to set up an intravenous drip for him."

"It's clear that we must go back to Livingston IV. I'll return to the bridge and see to it. I'll also initiate surveillance of the full electromagnetic sprectrum. Maybe we can detect whatever means is being used to attack Spock and then work out a way to jam it."

"You're assuming that the attack is coming from outside, Jim. Maybe whatever is attacking him is already in his system. It's true I can't detect anything, but that's not conclusive. He could have picked something up on Livingston IV."

"Let's hope not, Bones. I don't like to think that we're completely helpless." With that, Kirk turned and walked out of sickbay.

Soon the Enterprise was heading back towards Livingston IV. Taking a much more direct route, and at a high warp factor, the journey would take only a couple of days. Meanwhile:

1. Spock came round.
2. They found out how the attack on Spock was being mounted.
3. Results of the pregnancy tests came back. Every female crewmember was pregnant, including those supposedly sterile or beyond the menopause!
4. Fred/Uhura picked up a mysterious communication, which appeared to originate from Livingston IV.
