Along with the holo-emitter, Eric Jones had remembered to send the manual.
Most
of the computer power was built into the emitter. It had to take the real-
time video
feed from the camera, distinguish the object that was to be displayed
from its background and extract its image, and then apply the programmed-
in effects
to that image before projecting the hologram.
The easiest way to have the emitter learn to recognise the object whose image was to be projected was to have that object move, so the Champions - in touch with Exotica via the usual magic link - have her walk about in front of the camera. She is wearing the same outfit as when she was "abducted" by Synizn. After thirty seconds or so of initial processing, a very realistic, solid, three-dimensional seeming image of the princess forms in front of them. "Incredible!" Cederik exclaims. "Now we get to be artistic," Andrea says with a grin. "We can program in all sorts of effects. First we ought to make the image slightly transparent, and then we can apply some suitably gory fatal wounds." "I'm sorry that I won't be able to see what I look like," Exotica says. Her words seem to come from the hologram, for they have also got the audio link working. The hologram's lips move in perfect sync, so that the effect is totally realistic. "I think it may be as well that you can't see," Jarlath says. "You are going to look rather horrific, and I wouldn't want you to lose your lunch."
