Their Hostess Puts Her Foot Down

Eileen was giving all three of thim a troubled, disapproving look. "You were talking about going to the police. If there's been a crime committed, well, whatever it is, I won't be a party to it. It's clear there's something you're not telling Dr. Burke here, ladies, and something that none of you are telling me. If you don't wish to be honest with me, well, I'm afraid I will have to ask you to leave. Or I'll call the police, myself!"

She looks as if she means it, too, thought Stacy glumly.

1. Stacy sighed. "All right," she said, conceding defeat. "I'll tell you both the whole story, but you're not going to believe it."
2. Thinking fast, Stacy made up a new version of the story that she hoped would satisfy both of them, at least temporarily.
3. Stacy stood up. "All right," she said. "We're leaving."
