Burke had given Paula a funny look when she gave her sanitised version of
events.
He knew that the take-off had been no accident, though he had been
unconscious
from shortly afterwards until he had woken up on the ground in Ireland.
He gave Stacy a funny look now. But he said nothing.
"Well, if you're quite sure," the woman said. "My name's Eileen, by the way. Perhaps you'd like a cup of coffee? And maybe something to eat?" They all agreed that that sounded like a very good idea. Whilst Eileen was out in the kitchen, busying herself fixing a meal, Burke whispered to Stacy and Paula: "I'm playing along for now, until I find out what's behind all this. But I warn you that I shall want a very good explanation if I'm not to tell the true story to both Steinbeck and the police." "Of course," Stacy whispered back. And it did look as though she and Paula would have no alternative but to tell Dr Burke the whole story once the three of them were alone together. They would just have to hope that his discretion could be relied upon.
