So Stacy recounted the whole story, from the point where she had found herself on a subway train with amnesia. (That seemed to her like a very long time ago now, so much had happened since.)

When she had finished, ending with a request that they not tell anyone else, Burke turned to Paula. "Was all of that correct, so far as your knowledge goes?" he asked her.

"Yes. The bits where I was present happened exactly as she said."

"Hmm," Burke said. Stacy and Paula waited nervously to see what he was going to say.

  1. "Then I regret to say, Dr Bruder, that you seem to be just as crazy as she is."
  2. "Then I have to believe it. You aren't just anyone, after all, but the top person in your field." "I believe it too," Eileen said.
  3. "Then I have to believe it." "But I don't," Eileen said. "Science is all very well, but give me common sense any day."
