Smith the Phoney

She hung up the phone and repeated Falk's news to Julie.

"Yep," said Julie, "That clinches it, all right. If we don't want the DoD to have this research, we certainly don't want yet another shadowy, nameless power to have it."

"Geez, I hate all this cloak-and-dagger stuff," Stacy sighed. "So, when 'Smith' calls back, we tell him where to shove it, right?"

"I'm not so sure," said Julie. "Falk said he wouldn't be here for a couple of hours. This Smith guy is going to call back in less than an hour. Do you think we'll be safe until Falk shows up if we tell him no?"

Stacy considered this for a moment.

1. "Good point. Maybe we should pretend we're going to cooperate, and then just disappear with Falk before Smith realizes we've lied."
2. "Oh, come on, what can he do in an hour? Besides, I'd feel slimy even pretending to go along with this guy."
