Stacy and Julie Try to Pack

They started to pack what they would need, as Falk had advised, but both of them found it hard to concentrate as they waited for Smith to ring back.

Julie had almost nothing to pack anyway, of course. Her belongings would be in her own home, but her amnesia meant that she had no idea where that was. Stacy had an apartment full of items to choose from, but apart from the usual toiletries and some changes of clothes there wasn't much that she felt she really needed. Her lack of memory of her past meant that her possessions seemed like those of a stranger.

Eventually the phone rang again.

1. As expected, it was Smith. "We've decided to co-operate," Stacy said, hoping she sounded convincing.
2. As expected, it was Smith. Stacy decided to try to be clever. "Is there anyone at the DoD who would be willing to vouch that you are genuine?" she asked.
3. To Stacy's surprise, it wasn't Smith.
