Stacy picked up the handset and, a little nervously, said: "Hello." To her
relief,
she heard the familiar voice of Lt Falk. "Just wanted you to know that
we've almost
finalised getting a 'safe house' arranged for the two of you," he
said. "I'll come round in a
couple of hours' time to collect you. Be sure you've packed everything
you'll need."
"Just a moment," Stacy said. She put her hand over the receiver and turned to Julie. "It's Falk. He says he'll be round to take us to a hiding place in a couple of hours. So we need to decide now: do we want to do that or do we want to take up Smith's offer?" "Well, I trust Falk, but from what you've told me I don't trust Smith. So I'd prefer to go with Falk, but I'll stay with you whichever you decide." "Thanks, Julie. My instinct is the same is yours, and I really don't want the DoD to get their hands my research, though I fear Smith was telling the truth when he said that they'd be able to work it all out sooner or later even without me. That's assuming that they really do have a copy of my paper." Stacy turned back to the phone. "Thanks, Lieutenant. We'll be ready for you. But I ought to tell you that I've just had another phone call from Dr Smith, the DoD guy that I told you about." She went on to tell Falk the details of her conversation with Smith. When she had finished, Falk said:
