Ted seemed confused by the differing reactions of Stacy and Chris. He shifted uneasily from foot to foot. "I'd thought it would be you who wouldn't want to talk to me in view of what you caught us doing," he told Stacy. Stacy's eyebrows rose. What had they been doing? She could only think of one thing that would be likely to cause Ted quite such embarrassment.

"You'd better come in and give me that explanation you promised," she said.

  1. Chris said: "Um, I just have to go out for a minute. I'll be right back." Stacy had the feeling that he wouldn't be back, but she wasn't sure that she cared.
  2. Chris made another desperate attempt to divert Ted.
