"No?" That brief glimpse of whatever it was she had seen on Chris' face
was replaced by a hurt puppy dog look that almost made her relent. But...
"No," she said again, just as firmly. "I'm sorry, but... I don't even know who you are! I don't even know who I am!" "But I know who you are," he said, "and I know that I love you. Isn't that enough? Stacy, I want you to know that I'll be here for you, no matter what, memory problems and all. Let me prove it to you!" Romantic words... But there was something about his manner that was a little too glib. Stacy shook her head. "I..." But whatever Chris was about to add to this, he was interrupted by the sound of a knock on the door. "I'll get it," Stacy said, almost glad of the chance to get out of this man's confusing presence for a moment. "No!" Chris, strangely, sounded a little panicky. "It's probably just a salesman or something. We don't need the interruption, Stacy. We've got things to talk about." Without another word, Stacy got up and answered the door. Chris followed her, looking nervous. The man at the door looked nervous, himself, as well as having an odd sort of embarrassed, apologetic air. "Listen, Stacy," he said without preamble. "I know you probably don't want to talk to me, but I felt like I had to explain... to give you an apology..." "Ted!" hissed Chris. "Not now! Stacy doesn't want to talk to you!"
