It seemed to Stacy that she could almost access an important memory, but
every time she tried to pin
it down it slipped away again, tantalisingly just out of reach. Meanwhile
the
man was saying: "I'm Chris, your fiancé. We'll be getting married very
soon."
There was something about the man's - Chris's - expression that made Stacy uneasy. There seemed to be hints in his face of both nervousness and shiftiness. She decided to ask him the obvious question: "How soon is very soon?" "Well, we hadn't actually fixed a date, but we both were getting to the point where we didn't want to wait any longer. Tell you what, suppose I book us onto a flight to Las Vegas? We could get married in one of the chapels there, just the two of us. It would be much better than all the hassle of arranging a regular wedding. And it's not as though either of us gets on very well with our families, so we needn't worry about their feelings being hurt."
