Though the sun was still visible, low in what they assumed must be the
west,
a dark cloud was drifting across the sky from the south. It began to rain,
and
they huddled under a large pine tree (almost all the trees were pines)
that kept
them fairly dry, and discussed what they should do.
"We could wait under this tree for the rain to stop," Paula said, "but it will be dark in a few hours and I don't really want to spend the night lost in the woods. It's bound to be cold and uncomfortable. So I suggest we put up with getting wet, select a direction at random, and start walking. Hopefully we'll intersect a road, or at least a path, before too long." So that was what they agreed to do. Before long, they came across a path and began to follow it. It varied between wide, level road and vaguely- defined trail. To add to their discomfort from the rain, the surface was very, very boggy (except for those stretches of roadway). Then they at last came to a sign, which read "Western Way". "I know where we are," Burke said triumphantly. "I'd been beginning to think that this was rather familiar, and the sign clinches it. I've been here on vacation. We're in County Galway, in Ireland."
