They had probably only been trudging along the path for an hour or so, but
it felt like much, much longer when, soaked to the skin and covered up to
their knees in mud, they finally came upon a human dwelling. It was quite
a picturesque little cottage, Stacy thought, a small but cozy-looking place
with a low stone wall around it and a small dog gazing quizzically at them
from the front yard. "Thank God!" said Paula. "Civilization at last!" She and Burke began striding purposefully towards the front door. Stacy, a bit taken aback, surged to keep up. "Um, what are we going to say to them?" "How about 'save us, we're drowning'?" replied Burke wryly. Stacy would have liked to address this question further -- after all, none of them had a passport, and explaining how they'd gotten here would be impossible -- but Paula had already reached the door and was knocking firmly on the brightly painted wood.
