As her pain rapidly subsided, the Astra who was strapped to the table was
able to take in
her surroundings again. She wondered if Zodin's experiment had been
intended
to make her hallucinate. She seemed much smaller than she had been, and to
be an
unlikely combination of woman and fox. That might have been a genuine
physical
transformation caused by
the experiment, of course, but what made her favour the hallucination
theory
was the seeming arrival out of thin air of six strangely assorted people.
She realised that Zodin, Minestus and all the guards seemed to be paying her no attention, but were staring at the newcomers. Perhaps they were real after all. If they were, then the diversion might give her a chance of escape. She was sufficiently smaller now that she could easily slip out of her bonds. Taking care to make no noise, she did so. Meanwhile Zodin was addressing the new arrivals: "Lay down your weapons and you will not be harmed. Otherwise my guards will disarm you by force." The first half of her statement was a lie, of course, but the second half was true enough.
