Fred slept lightly. He heard Diana whimpering in the dark, but said
nothing, for fear an outburst from her might attract more creatures of the
night. The creatures during the day were bad enough, but at night they
had the advantage of seeing him, while he could not see them. Fred
preferred a fair fight, or at least a fight he considered
fair. Shortly after daybreak, he woke Diana. She was grumpy because she had not slept well. It took them nearly all morning to get to the first farm outside the village. When they arrived, they saw that it was an ashen heap. Diana did not know that it was fresh ash, but Fred had seen the house standing just the day before. At least, he thought, the orcs would not attack the village itself. But when they had emerged from the last stand of forest, Fred eyes dropped when he saw that the whole village was a steamy pile of burnt lumber and tortured corpes. Both he and Diana were silent from the shock. Fred knew that only a large group of orcs would do this. But what would so large a group be doing? What would bring them here? It appalled Fred even more to see how few orcs had died during the conflict, and how well armed these orcs were. Almost all of them had armor, and their weapons were better than the villagers. This was no ordinary group of orcs.
