Diana wondered about Fred. He was indeed very brave, but lacked the
chivilry she expected in a knight. His strength and ability to fight were
uncomparable, yet he put walls up so no one could know him. Somehow she
was attacted to him. He was a natural leader; she only wished she could
follow. Despite numerous urgings from Fred, Diana was not able to move as quickly as he would have wished. She was tired from her many days in the cave and had not eaten properly. Besides this, she was not dressed for wilderness travel. Her shoes made her feet sore and blistered. The dress kept getting caught in bushes and inhibited walking. Worse yet, orc patrols infiltrated the area in which they were walking. Were it not for Fred's sharp eyes and battle instincts, they would have been caught more than once. About an hour after dark it became apparent that they would have to stop for the night. Fred could not trace the path on a moonless night, and there was always the threat that they would run into a horde of orcs. Fred was clearly upset at stopping. He snapped at Diana when she asked if he would start a fire. "No, I won't start a fire! The orcs will find us!" "But how will I get warm?" pleaded Diana. "It's just going to be a cold night. Live with it." He felt a little bad for snapping at her, especially when she cried. Why couldn't she know better?
