"I'm trying to find out which way the orcs went," Fred explained to Diana,
as he looked for
footprints in the soil - or perhaps "paw-prints" would be closer to the
mark. "And
then are you going to follow them?" Diana asked.
Fred could not help but smile at the naïveté of her question. "And risk being caught by one of their scouts? I have two reasons for wanting to know which way they have gone. First, to ensure that we go a different way as we head for the capital. Second, so that when I report to the King I can give him some idea of where he should send a troop of soldiers to deal with them. It is a serious business to have so many orcs, and so well-armed, pillaging the countryside, and they need to be destroyed as soon as possible. It was fortunate that you caused me to divert from my quest, because otherwise I should not have stumbled on this, and it might have been a long time before anyone got word to the King concerning what is going on." "That's the most you have ever said to me," Diana observed. "So have you managed to work out which way they went?"
