Sandra decided that the best choice would be to take the longer route. One day, she hoped
to challenge the depths of the Shreken and kill the wicked and powerful Dragon who
dwelled there, but not yet. She wasn't about to rush in unprepared and throw her life away
for nothing. If she died now, she would win no honor or renown for it.
Five days after her skirmish with the Orcs, once she had reached the Shreken pass, all thoughts of honor had been driven from her mind. The struggle to survive was more important to her now. The Shreken was desolate and bitter cold even in the spring, and this was the height of winter. Sandra berated herself for not having waited another few months to start. She didn't want to die of cold in the heart of the Shreken, where no one would find her body for years, if ever, and she would be forced to wander the earth as a ghost. She found she could live with the cold, though, for it was no worse than spending time with her family. As the sun began to set, Sandra reached the beginning of the mountain pass. A long and difficult journey lay ahead of her. Not wanting to be seen, she had set out without a horse. She had therefore been only able to carry a small amount of provisions. She could hunt, of course, having brought a bow and arrow with her. But the prey would be sparse in this part of the Shreken. Perhaps she should have taken the other route after all. She could have scavenged food from the Orcs, although it would have been hard. An hour into her journey in the mountain pass, she came across something interesting.
