Sandra Escapes

Sandra hoped that she could outrun the orcs. The one she had killed had
been
a heavily-built creature rather than seemingly being built for speed, and
she hoped
that he was typical of his race. She ran in the
direction of the Shreken, hoping that she could build up a good lead
before she
left the cover provided by the forest and had to climb into the foothills.
She found that it wasn't easy to run with a sword in a scabbard at your side and a pack on your back, but soon the sound of the orcs behind her began to fade. She kept running until, lungs bursting, she could run no more, and dropped her speed to a walk. The trees were thinning out by now, and the ground was beginning to slope uphill. The foothills of the Shreken lay ahead, and she could catch glimpses behind them of the snowcapped mountain peaks themselves. Sandra would soon have to make a choice between two passes through the Shreken into Aqualaria. The eastern pass would mean a much more direct journey to the Aqualarian capital, Themyscira, her intended destination, but it would take her close to the entrance to the Southern Caves, where a dragon and other fabulous monsters were said to dwell. The other pass might be safer (though in the neighbourhood of the Shreken nowhere was totally safe), but it cut through the Shreken some thirty miles further west; therefore taking it would make her journey substantially longer.
