The Never Ending Quest - Episode 16084

The man who created the Book read over the accounts fairly quickly. One of the abilities that had been bestowed on him when he'd been chosen for this was the ability to absorb and understand complicated information quite quickly. What's presented here, of course, is an abridged version of what he read.

First, a word on multiversal physics. The following is taken from Doctor Who: The Taking of Planet 5 by Simon Bucher-Jones and Mark Clapham:

The theoretical argument goes like this. The end state of an open universe will, given absolutely infinite past time, expand to infinity. Our universe is open. Therefore, at some future point it will expand to infinity. An infinitely expanded universe will exhibit the following characteristics: zero Eiensteinian space-time curvature, and little, if any, matter over vast ranges of space-time.

Such an area of space-time can be regarded mathematically as a domain of De Sitter space. [a theoretical geometric space used in mathermatics, which has whatever number of dimensions (n) are necessary for the solution of any particular problems.] An empty De Sitter space can be shown to lead without additional cuasal interaction to the cration of a further universe similar to our own. Thus as our universe approaches heat death, it will naturally "give birth" to one, or more, sucessor universes.

As the characteristics required for the formation of a quasi-flat De Sitter domain will be reached within a merely large (but non-infinite) time, it is possible that this process has in fact already occurred, and that our universe is itself a "successor" universe to an older open structure. Further, if it has occurred once, it may well have occurred many times and a number (either large or infinite) of universes have come to be and ended, are currently in existance, and will come into existance after our own. Those universes will expand and either end as open universes, eventually budding themselves, or fail as closed universes opening out onl to "fall back" to the surface of the original space-time. It should be noted that these universes are not the quantum universes predicted by the Many Worlds Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics...

What this means, more or less, is that there are a large number of universes out there lying outside our own, and that when each universe "dies," it's possible for them to "reproduce," forming more new universes.

What's more, each universe contains an infinite number of quantum universes (sometimes called "analog universes") which branch off from its main time track randomly. So each universe is a multiverse within itself. And every universe contains one or more versions of Fred and Astra somewhere.

But each universe also contains innate intelligence. A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, this was referred to as "the living force." More recently, it has been referred to as "The Edge." Each universe is, effectively, alive. The authorities that guard its analog sub- universes--its Rules and Agents or Elementals and their champions--are its antibodies, designed to protect them from threats from within.

There are also Swimmers, in essence, predator universes that feed on "normal" universes. And then, there is Crystallic. It can travel between analog universes and between true universes. It is the only thing that can exist in the void between universes. No one knows how. Some say that Crystallic is alive, and exists in a sort of state of symbiosis with the universes. Some say that a large enough agglomeration of it might become sentient. But no one knows...

Up until now, the largest threat encountered by the universes have been their natural predators, the Swimmers.

  1. But now a greater threat has emerged, one that threatens every universe...
