"What task is that?" Carola asked. The old man paused a moment before
speaking. "Further up this particular tunnel," the old man spoke as he
gestured, "is an area of great peril...but beyond is a shrine, in which is
held a mystical relic which is of interest to me, a silver ring. If you
can retrieve it for me, I will gladly lift the curse from ye, and also
give you a gift of my own in return." "We'll do it," Carola agreed. "We
will?" Fred asked, a note of irritation in his voice now. "Do you want to
wander these caverns forever?" Carola countered. "Are you our leader now,
then?" Belinda asked Carola, a sarcastic note to her voice. "We don't
even know who you are still," Astra said to the old man. The old man
nodded slowly. "Aye, I forget my manners sometimes. My name is
Qundarian. Just remember, do not take anything except the ring. Touch
none of the other artifacts or precious items you may see along the way.
It's important that ye remember this." Astra nodded, turning back to the
others. "Well, let's go," Astra said. They turned and began walking up
the tunnel Qundarian had indicated, and Fred touched the charm in his
pocket as he walked. He still wondered what the purpose of it was, and
what was behind the strange old man's behavior. Something just didn't
seem right, but he wasn't sure what it could be. His mind wandered back
to the old man's warning...that his enemy was closer than he knew... "It's
a dead end!" Astra said, jolting Fred out of his thoughts. There was a
wall directly in front of them, ending the passage completely. "I knew he
was just a senile old man," Belinda muttered, ever the positive one.
