They held a hurried whispered conference. "Look," Carola said, seeing that the other three appeared to be at a loss for the moment. "Either he's the harmless senile old man that he appears, in which case he can't really have cursed us; or else he's an eccentric and potentially dangerous wizard, and we really have been cursed. We have no way of being sure which is true. In the first case, we don't need to threaten him, whilst in the second case to antagonise him further could only make matters worse. That only leaves reasoning with him."

Turning back towards the old man, she said: "Sir, Fred didn't mean any harm, and I'm sure he'd like to apologise for losing his temper. Please would you consider lifting your curse?"

  1. "Oh, all right. Perhaps I was a little hasty."
  2. "No. And if you carry on pestering me like this, then I may decide to add to it."
  3. "Only if the four of you will carry out a certain task for me first."
  4. "I overheard what you said to the others. A masterly analysis, if I may say so."
