The Secret Door

"Wait a moment!" Astra said. "Perhaps this is not the solid rock wall that it seems." Experimentally, she banged the pommel of her sword-hilt on the wall in two different spots, first at the side of the tunnel and then at its end. The sound it made the second time was quite different. "It's hollow behind here," she said. "There must be a hidden door. Help me to search for the mechanism to open it."

She began running her hand over the surface of the rock. Before the others had a chance to assist, she said: "There's a sort of small indentation here. Maybe if I press it with my finger..." She was interrupted by a loud screeching sound, as a section of the rock wall moved sideways. It left a rectangular doorway some four feet high and two feet wide.

Astra took her sword in her hand, then ducked her head and went through the doorway. The others followed her.

1. They found themselves in what must be the area of great peril which the old man had mentioned.
2. They found themselves in a small chamber, with a more obvious door at its far end.
