Astra breathed a sigh of relief as the old man agreed, and the
proceeded to follow him through the dark, winding tunnels. After a few
minutes, it seemed difficult to tell which way they were going, and the
sense of direction became jumbled, leaving them with only a faint
suspicion that they were travelling in circles...and that the senile old
man had no idea what he was talking about. "How much further will it be?"
Belinda asked after another sigh of irritation. "In due time, young
lassie," replied the old man. After a few more minutes yet of travelling,
the old man passed Fred the charm almost casually. "Ye'll still need
this, young warrior," the old man whispered to Fred, just out of
reach. "It will save your life, mark my words. Don't lose it, for your
enemies are closer than you know." The old man stopped and turned
suddenly, addressing everyone. "I've taken ye as far as I can," he
spoke. "The rest ye'll have to foot on your own. Many blessings." The
old man turned and walked into a side tunnel in a rapid stride. "Wait!"
Astra called, intending to follow, but the old man was already gone into
the darkness, and not a sound of his footsteps were to be heard. Fred
looked at the charm in his hand, then pocketed it. Looking around, he saw
only one other passage leading out of the cavernous area, and there
appeared to be light further along it, as though someone was building a
fire. "Should we follow him?" Carola asked, speaking of the old
man. "I'm hungry," complained Belinda. Fred looked around once again
before settling on a decision.
