"Watch your step," Fred said as he exited the boat, with Astra and her two
recently-freed sisters just behind him. "Something's not right," Astra
muttered as they made their way back into the network of tunnels that had
brought them to the lake in the first place. "This doesn't look
familiar...and I've come to know this way quite well since I've been
forced to be in this place." Carola looked at her sister uncertainly. "So
what you're saying is that we don't know where we're going?" Carola
asked. Fred heard Belinda's distinct sigh of irritation. "Look," Astra
explained, "I know what I'm talking about. These tunnels have changed,
whether you want to believe me or not. We're going back the way we came,
yet this is not the same passage that brought us here. I don't understand
it any more than anyone else does!" Fred heard a noise at that point,
straining to listen carefully. "What's that?" he whispered, and the
sisters ceased their talking to listen as well, and not much sooner did a
figure emerge around the corner bundled in a thick colorful robe. It
appeared to be an older man, with hair that once may have been dark but
was now streaked with gray. He wore an assortment of charms and pendants
around his neck, and seemed to be doing his best not to trip over the
length of his own robe. "Good mornin' to ye, young lassies," the old man
nodded to Astra, Belinda, and Carola. "And to you, young lad," he added,
nodding to Fred. The four looked at each other, uncertain as to how to
proceed. He motioned Fred closer. Fred, putting his hand on the hilt of
his sword, approached with caution. "There's no need for all that," the
old man assured, more quietly now. "With the Dragon against ye, I think
you'll need all the help you can get." With that, the old man removed one
of the charms from his own neck and held it out to Fred. "Here, take
this," the old man said. Fred looked to Astra, but she appeared as
clueless as he did.
