The alien commander blinked, apparently rather taken aback at Paula's
vehement tone. Paula stared back at him with a look of intense
determination as she continued. "No! I've spent my entire life in pursuit
of scientific knowledge, and you are not going to deny me this
opportunity. I think I've earned that much, haven't I? Besides, I'm
Stacy's friend, and I'm not going to abandon her. Her brother is missing,
and she's going to need all the help and moral support she can get." Paula
crossed her arms defiantly and stood there in a manner which clearly said
that if the alien wanted to get rid of her, he'd have to drag her kicking
and screaming to the teleportation equipment. The alien looked from Paula to Stacy. "Is this so?" he asked. "Do you wish for this human to stay here on the ship?" Stacy felt oddly touched by the commander's apparent willingness to let her make the decsion. "Yes," she said without hesitation. Now that she had her memories back and could remember all the things she had Paula had been through together over the course of their friendship, she was even more certain that Paula was the one person she'd want at her side during a difficult situation like this one. "And she does deserve it," Stacy said out loud. "I really couldn't have gotten into the ship without her help." "Very well," said the alien. Paula gave him an ear-to-ear grin, then turned to Stacy and whispered "Yes!" Stacy stifled a giggle. Then the alien turned to Dr. Burke. "And what about you?" he said. "Do you wish to stay here, as well, or to return to the planet?" Burke looked startled. "You're giving me the choice?" "Yes," said the alien. "It would seem only fair." "Well, in that case," said Dr. Burke slowly...
