Once the two vessels were safely docked, and Stacy had shut down their own
ship's
engines, she stood up and stretched. "I've got time to answer your
question now,"
she said. "I'm returning this ship to its rightful owners. Prepare
yourself, because
very shortly you and Paula are going to be the third and fourth humans, as
far
as I know, to meet aliens from outer space. Be reassured that they're
friendly -
unlike a certain other race of aliens that I've been involved with."
"Your explanation is as clear as mud," Burke grumbled. "Well, I'll go into more detail later, but there's no time now. I'll just press this button that will open the hatch, and then we should be able to walk straight into the other vessel." When they entered the other vessel, two of the aliens were waiting for them. Stacy had got enough experience of them by now, that they no longer all looked alike to her, and she recognised one of them as the ship's commander. "Well done, Stacy," he said. (Stacy had no idea whether the aliens were male or female, but it seemed somehow natural to think of them as male.) "We're very pleased to have our survey craft back. I hadn't expected you to bring a couple of friends along, though." Thinking she had better introduce them, Stacy replied: "This is Dr Paula Bruder. She's an old friend who happened to be one of the scientific team researching the ship. I couldn't have got access to it but for her. And this is Dr Burke, who turned out still to be aboard the ship when Paula and I thought we had it to ourselves." "I see. Welcome to both of you...
