"Yes," said Betty, who had had this "Champion" business explained to her,
"but..." She trailed off, unsure what to say next. She'd intended to
point out that going into the radioctive cave was sure to bring terrible
suffering to the Doctor, even if it couldn't kill or regenerate him. But
then, as she thought back over the episode, a horrible thought struck her.
Hadn't the only way to defeat the insane leader of the spiders involved
taking the blue crystal into the cave? Something about completing a
crystalline network whose psychic feedback would destroy the evil
arachnid... Would the Doctor have to go through that, after all? And how
could she possibly bring herself to tell him that? Betty felt a lump forming in her throat, completely driving out the thrill she'd felt at getting to ride in the Whomobile. "Are you feeling all right?" asked the Doctor, after she had been silent for several mintues. "Yes," she said. "I've just realized that I don't much like this knowing the future business. How do you deal with it?" The Doctor smiled. "Well, you get used to it, after a few centuries' practice." Betty found herself smiling in return.
