The Master, being, as always, the opportunistic sort, took advantage of the
Rani's momentary distraction to leap forward and wrest the device from her
hands, quickly bringing it to bear on its erstwhile owner. "Do you expect me to feel threatened?" asked the Rani cooly. "It's quite clear that the device isn't working." "It's not working on humans," corrected the Master. "I've had intimate first-hand experience of its effects on Time Lords." She made some adjustments to a dial on the side of the gadget. "I'm not entirely sure what effect these settings will have on Gallifreyan physiology," she said, "but I suspect the results will be... interesting." And she pointed it directly between the Rani's hearts. The Rani, noting the adjustments she had made, paled slightly. "All right," she said with a tightly controlled smile, "perhaps a partnership isn't out of the question, after all." "Partnership?" sneered the Master. "Why should I be interested in a partnership when I have control of the device all to myself?" "Because you don't have the know-how to build the full version," the Rani shot back. "And because I have your TARDIS!" The Master considered that for a moment. "Fair enough," she said finally. "Perhaps we can work together profitably." The Doctor and the four humans up to now had simply stood there, following the conversation between the two evil Time Lords with interest. But now...
