The Rani selected Betty-2, apparently at random, and aimed the morphogenic
device at her. The Doctor started to say: "It appears that I have no
choice but
to do as you wish," when
Melissa unwisely decided it was the time for heroics, and lunged for the
Rani in
an attempt to wrest the device from her.
Melissa was too slow, however, and the Rani pulled the trigger. Betty-2 was bathed in a blue light for a moment. The Rani then swiftly swivelled to cover Melissa, but she need not have bothered, since the redhead had stopped in horror at what had resulted from her miscalculation. "Oops!" she said. "So noble of you to attempt to save your twin," the Rani sneered. Everyone watched Betty-2, her friends holding their breath as they waited for her to start to change. But nothing happened! The Rani looked concerned. "Must be a malfunction," she muttered. As Betty-2's feeling of panic receded, and her brain started up again, an idea came to her. Was it possible that the unknown person who had somehow caused her body to be altered to a duplicate of Melissa's had in the process given her new body an extreme resistance to any further morphogenic alteration - a resistance not only far superior to the human norm but also even superior to that of a Gallifreyan? [See www.addventure.com, Game 3, episode 94191, option 4.] She didn't say anything, of course, As far as the Rani knew, Betty-2 presumed, she was an ordinary human woman, and she preferred to keep her in ignorance.
