The first button that Stacy punched was the one that closed and secured
the hatch to the outside.
She didn't want any of the security guards to get aboard. Burke was
just going to have to come with them - assuming that he wasn't able
physically
to restrain her from completing the launch sequence.
Dr Burke clearly intended to do just that. He strode purposefully towards Stacy, but just as he laid his hand on her arm Paula picked up a laptop that one of the scientists had left behind when he went for lunch, and hit him on the head with it. He slumped to the floor unconscious. Paula looked worried. "I hope I haven't killed him," she said. (The laptop was still functioning perfectly, a tribute to its solid construction.) Stacy was too busy to worry about Burke's condition. As Paula bent over his body, she went through the launch sequence, relieved to find that she seemed to have all the knowledge that she needed. Within a minute, the saucer had taken off. Stacy hoped that if any of the guards had been close enough and sufficiently alert to hear Burke's call, they would have had the sense to fall back once the engines started. Meanwhile, Paula had been relieved to find that Burke's breathing was strong and regular. I guess I've probably just got myself a criminal record on the twin counts of assault and stealing a spaceship, she thought. She looked around, hoping to find something with which she could tie Burke up.
