Vaeren was tall and dark, with a goatee beard and burning eyes. There was something rather hypnotic about those eyes, Belinda thought. "Come," he said. "We shall discuss negotiations in a moment. But first, tell me about your prisoners. I understand that you picked them up on the way here. Are they intended as a gift for me?"

Belinda almost panicked. What was she going to say about Jarlath and Carola? They should have discussed much more thoroughly beforehand what they were going to say, she realised. In retrospect, it was obvious that Vaeren would have wanted to know about their "prisoners" before discussing anything else. "I'm sorry," she managed, "but I'm afraid that our master the dragon requires that all prisoners we capture should be brought back to him."

  1. "Very well. In that case they can stay in my dungeon until you are ready to depart."
  2. "I'm afraid that your master's wishes carry little weight here. I have a use for these two."
  3. "But there is something very unusual about the girl. I detect great magic within her - apparently centred on her stomach, of all unlikely places!"
  4. In spite of the danger they were in, Belinda couldn't prevent herself daydreaming about carrots for a moment, so she missed what Vaeren said next.
  5. Deciding that the longer they waited, the greater the risk of discovery, Matthias drew his sword and charged at Vaeren.
  6. Then, something else enters Vaeren's castle.
