Matthias shuddered with thought of what that use might be. He cursed hismelf for being stupid and not thinking everything beforehand. What would Lord Martel of Heron or Simon Lightbringer have done in a situation like this? Surely neither of them have made as much of a fool of himself as he and his friends had. For a moment, he resented the others, but realized that it would do him no good. It was his fault too, for not admonishing Jarlath and asking him to reconsider his course. Reluctant as he was to admit it, he was hopelessly out of his depth now.
"I see," said Belinda. "I suppose you'll take us to our quarters now?" Thank God for her presence of mind--Matthias was too churned up to say anything. Vaeren smiled, a look that he did not like and he could tell Belinda did not either. "Hardly. I can tell you are fakes. The spell that supports your matrix is too crudely put together for Minestus. It doesn't have his distinctive style to it. And a real servant of Minestus would know the terms our our agreement." He snapped his fingers at the eerie unliving guards. "Take them away," he said.
