Dr. Edwards' Diagnosis

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 13792

"'Hmm?'" repeated Stacy anxiously. "That doesn't sound good!"

"Well," said Edwards, "Let me put it this way. I've got some good news, and some bad news."

"Yes?"

"The good news is, it looks to me like your memories should be fully recoverable."

Stacy let out a relieved sigh. "Don't scare me like that!"

He smiled and continued. "All your memories are intact in your brain somewhere. It's just a question of accessing them. Now, the bad news is, it's going to require surgery."

She gave him a puzzled frown. "I thought that's what you were going to do, anwyay."

"Not necessarily. I had hoped to be able to do it non-invasively, by stimulating the electrical potentials in your brain using external fields. But, judging by the readings I'm getting here, that won't unlock all of your blocked-off memories. Only about 70 or 80 percent, I'd say. In order to recover the rest, I'm going to have to give you an implant."

"Implant?!" Stacy felt her face go pale. "You want to put an implant in my brain?"

"It's not a terribly complicated procedure," said Edwards gently. "I can do it under local anaesthetic. It's your choice, of course. If you don't want me to operate, I'll do what I can non-invasively. But if you want to recover all of your memories, I'm going to have to operate."

Stacy cast a glance at the Doctor, who looked back at her with a confident and reassuring gaze. Then again, he wasn't the one who was facing the prospect of having his skull opened up by a dipsomaniac doctor and having some weird electronic gizmo shoved into his brain. Stacy hesitated for a long moment and said:

  1. "All right. Let's do it."
  2. "70 or 80 percent sounds acceptable to me. I don't think I want an implant in my skull!"
