"Oh ye of little faith," said Dr Edwards. "Still, I can understand your
having misgivings. It must sound
rather alarming to you, as I know that implants weren't in use in your own
time. You understand
that which 70 or 80 per cent you get back will be pretty much
random. You may
find you can remember some trivial things, whilst you may be missing some
that are highly
important to you. Are you sure you don't want to change your mind?"
Stacy considered for a moment what the doctor had said, but then shook her head decisively. "I can live with a few gaps in my memory," she said. She really didn't want to undergo brain surgery under local anaesthetic at the hands of a doctor with an apparent drink problem. "All right," the doctor said. "Let's get on with it then." He removed the hairdryer-like object from Stacy's head, attached two electrodes to her temples, and then replaced the "hairdryer". He fiddled with some switches, and then said: "We're ready to go. When I press that button there, you will feel extremely confused for a moment, but after a few seconds things will start to become clear again. Then, over the next thirty seconds or so your memories will gradually return. After a minute, the machine will automatically switch itself off, as beyond that there's no chance of retrieving any further memories, and too long an exposure to the field could be harmful. So say the word, and I'll press the button." "Go ahead," Stacy said, and Dr Edwards pressed the button.
