Simpler Just To Tell the Truth

Thoms merely stared at her for a moment, then, to Stacy's surprise, suddenly burst out laughing. When she had finished, her whole attitude seemed to have changed into something more relaxed, more friendly.

Does she only respect aggressive people?, Stacy wondered, or is she just pleased at having gotten a reaction out of me?

Stacy sighed. The irritation had drained out of her, and now she was simply feeling tired of this whole thing. "All right," she said. "You want the truth? Fine, but if you don't believe me, I don't want to hear about it. The truth is I don't know the man in that picture, I don't remember that picture being taken, and I had no idea until just now that I'd ever even met Dr. Arden. I have amnesia. I tested the drug on myself. Is that what you wanted to know?"

1. Thoms gave an elaborate sigh. "Why won't you just tell me the real truth, Dr. Jones?"
2. "Thank you," said Thoms. "Believe it or not, things are starting to make more sense to me now."
3. Thoms looked surprised, but before she could reply, there was a knock on her door.
