Fred realised that, whether or not it was true that there was some greater purpose behind recent events, she was almost certainly stuck with this body, so she had better try to come to terms with it. I suppose I should start by choosing a new name, she thought. Hm, what female variants of 'Fred' are there? 'Frieda' doesn't sound too bad. That will do.

Frieda knew that she needed to find shelter before nightfall. She didn't know how long she had until then, but she could not afford to waste any time. A path led away from the lake through the forest, and with no obvious alternative she followed it.

After she had been walking for about an hour:

  1. It began to get dark, and she could feel it starting to get even colder.
  2. She saw a wisp of smoke rising above the trees. Walking towards it, she came to a log cabin.
  3. She saw some footprints in the snow. But these were very strange footprints.
