Uncertain Night

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 13366

Anastasia shook her head. "No, that's still too painful for me to tell you. Maybe later."

Natalia nodded wistfully at this, and an awkward silence set in. Clouds had rolled in as the morning had progressed, and soon the silence was punctuated by the staccatto beat of rain on the loft's windows. Natalia exhaled sharply, releasing tension, and spoke.

"You don't believe me. I understand. Hell, I wouldn't either."

Anastasia pursed her lips in hesitation, then answered.

"No, it's not that, at least not entirely. I'm torn. Part of me feels violated, almost raped for caring about you. At the same time, I can't help but still feel for you, because...because you remind me of someone I lost ages ago."

Natalia moved closer to Anastasia, but the revived Frank shied away. Nat sighed deeply, and watched as Anastasia quite brazenly got out of the bed and, unconcerned about her nudity, walked back to her room.

She feels it too, I know, and maybe that's why it's hard for us both.

At least that's what I'm hoping.

All the same, though, I know not to go after her right now. I'd only end up regretting it.

The strangest thing, though, is I know now I couldn't deal if she left. Something about sharing her curse just makes me want to be close to her forever.

It was nothing like I had expected.

I had thought of it so clinically, weighing advantages versus weaknesses, a beancounting risk versus gain. The actual experience, though, was overwhelming. It was shocking, the feelings that welled up, but at the same time it was like rediscovering a part of myself I had repressed. I loved it.

I just hope that we reconcile before moonrise, because I want to share it with her again.

Much to Nat's dismay, the day had passed with Anastasia's door firmly closed and latched. She had eaten a lunch of weak broth and tea, and only a cheese sandwich for dinner, constantly gazing at the door. Anastasia herself did not answer her knocking, nor did she ask for food. Nat was worried, but she decided to wait for the sun to set.

Night arrived as the rain picked up pace, whipping into a thunderstorm. Natalia waited outside the door in a loose-fitting bathrobe. She had learned how problematic clothes were to the change the previous night, and didn't want to ruin another set. A tremor passed through her, and she realized that though she couldn't see the moon, it affected her nonetheless. She stared in amasement at her hands as they twisted and grew claws, tawny hairs sprouting along her arms, her hair cascading down towards the floor, growing wilder and manelike. She snarled as a bit of pain seeped into her joints, the change completing itself.

Suddenly, her now sensitive pointed ears twitched as she heard a crashing of glass coming from Anastasia's room. Fear seized her, and she gripped the knob tightly, her unwitting strength snapping the latch clean off as the door swung open to find...

  1. Anastasia was gone, rain pouring in the broken window...
  2. Anastasia stood snarling as the rain came in the window, opposite her a young man she seemed to recognize...
  3. Anastasia stood over a broken vase, her pawlike hands bleeding. She was crying.
