An End to Falsehoods

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 13258

"Yes," Anastasia said, "my memories are back. A werewolf has great regenerative powers, and it looks like those extend to repairing damaged neural tissue. And I remember now just how unpleasant it could be, being a werewolf, with almost everyone's hand turned against you if your true nature was discovered. Though I hope that things may be better in this 'enlightened' age, I wouldn't bet on it.

"So I've got to tell you I'm sorry that you've been infected, Nat, even though you went into this with your eyes open. I didn't mean to bite you; it was just the passion of the moment. I'd be even more sorry, if I didn't suspect that this was precisely what you've been angling for. After all, I know now that the story you spun me was a tissue of lies from beginning to end - all that nonsense about us being childhood friends. You wanted the same thing as Myers and his friends, even if you weren't prepared to be quite so ruthless.

"It's funny, but in the old days I don't think I'd have had much sympathy for you at all. Times were hard back then, and they bred hard people. But the layer of modern knowledge and ideas that Myers and his friends transplanted into me so I could function in the modern world seems to have modified my thoughts, made me somewhat softer."

"Yes, you're right about what I was after," Nat admitted. "You're sorry and I'm sorry. I hope you'll believe me when I say that I really have fallen in love with you. This whole thing has gotten harder and harder since you moved in with me. But the thought of gaining the ability to be cured of any illness or injury I'd incurred previously as soon as I entered the 'active' werewolf phase was just too big a lure to resist. And then there's the slowed aging, of course. Just how old were you, when they put you in that tomb?" "Eighty-three. It meant I could never stay more than a few years in any one place, or people would notice that I didn't seem to age. Usually, I could manage to hide away for three nights every month, so the werewolf change was less of a problem - except for that last time." Anastasia's face darkened at the memory. "What happened?" Nat asked. "And why were you put in the tomb alive? And how did you survive all that time? Myers probably knows, but I don't."

  1. Anastasia told her.
  2. Anastasia shook her head. "No, that's still too painful for me to tell you. Maybe later."
