Unwitting Legacy

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 13231

"Whatever happens, Stacy, as I said before, I'll be there for you."

Stacy sighed at Natalia saying this. In spite of her lingering mistrust of Nat, she couldn't deny she had some sort of feelings for this woman, feelings which were growing steadily. The physical closeness to Nat had increased over the past few days. The disturbing vision she had experienced--of kissing that peasant girl--had felt right. Though she was still very unsure of herself, something in her wanted to reciprocate the love Nat had expressed.

They spent that day in a surprisingly carefree manner, doing things that only good friends, or perhaps closer could trust each other with. They shared ice cream, went to the park, and laughed many times.

It was as if...

It was like whistling when you're going down a dark path on your way home, so you wouldn't feel alone. It was like nervous laughter when you're in your bed at night. A sort of freakish gallows jubilee that didn't negate what they had to face, but made it more bearable by simple distraction.

The day passed very quickly, but it was spent enjoyably. Before they knew it, dusk was falling.

"Well, Nat, moment of truth"

"I guess it is. Nervous?"

"A little. I guess I just want to get it over with."

They didn't speak after they returned to the loft. Natalia but on some soothing vaguely folkish sounding music and lit a few candles around the room before turning out the lights. There in the flickering illumination they sat across from each other in silence.

Stacy watched as the moon rose in the window, bright and full. As before, her heart began a fiendish tattoo beat, the blood singing in her veins, pounding in her head. She broke into a cold sweat, her breathing becoming ragged. She swallowed painfully, and unexpectedly bit her tongue. Probing gently with it, she found her canine teeth had grown longer, sharper. A feeling like a creeping beneath her skin developed. She looked down at her arms and saw dark hairs sprouting.

Natalia watched in amasement as Stacy's features took on a bestial cast.

Stacy was amid a flood of memories, experiencing them all in a rush, yet none of them were understood. She looked at Natalia, but other images were superimposed over Nat's form. She moved towards Natalia, at the same time overwhelmed by the surprising recollection that she looked very much like a former lover.

Natalia seemed frightened, but a smile and a few words from Stacy helped her collect herself.

"I'm still me. Don't worry."

With that, Stacy came even closer, and Natalia could feel her hot breath on her cheek. Stacy remembered more about the former lover. A name came to mind, and she spoke it.

"Marie..."

"What the..."

Then, she kissed her, and caught in the moment, Nat accepted. Suddenly though, Nat pulled away, a trickle of blood evident at the corner of her mouth.

"You...you bit me!"

It is a tense night for Dr. Johannes Myer. Tonight of all nights it is his supreme consternation to be nothing more than a bystander. The past two nights, two of the four enchanted stones he keeps vigil on has turned a translucent cobalt blue, a disturbing trend meaning the subject he has invested months of research and work in may be regaining her senses.

Wiping the sweat from his brow, he watches the third stone change color, and then the fourth. Finally, suddenly, all four turn an opalescent black.

"That's not...that's not supposed to happen"

Frantic, he rushes to the scrying basin in the back of his office, pouring water into it with the nearby decanter. Chanting in the Coptic dialect which took him nearly a decade to master, he gazes into the basin as an image forms in the ripples. Looking carefully, he just barely gets a hazy image of two bestial creatures, one dark and one tawny, wrestling passionately.

He dashes immediately for the phone.

"Stanton? The subject has passed on the curse..."

They greeted the first rays of dawn entwined as lovers beneath the sheets of Natalia's bed. Nat was the first to speak as they awoke.

"My God, Stacy that was just...incredible!"

"Wasn't it? But call me by my real name. Call me Anastasia..."

  1. Natalia sputtered in shock...
