Nat's first thought was that, in spite of all her precautions, the
Thothmes Society
had managed to trace and snatch Anastasia. But then she noticed that there
were no
fragments of glass inside the room, and that therefore the window must
have been broken from
the inside. She felt sick in her stomach. Did I really
drive you to flee? she wondered. I got what I originally wanted
from you, but
that doesn't seem to matter at all now.
She wondered if her enhanced sense of smell in her current form would enable her to track Anastasia. After last night, she knew that she could recognise Anastasia's scent with no trouble. In fact she could smell that scent in the room now. But outside, the thunder rain was still falling heavily, some of it splashing in through the broken window, and she realised that any scent that Anastasia might have left would have immediately been washed away. Turning away from the window she belatedly noticed a sheet of paper left on the bedside table. Picking it up, she found that Anastasia had left her a note. The writing was hard to read; Anastasia must have written the note after her hands had changed into demi-paws which would not be well suited to grasping something as delicate as a pen. Nat managed with some difficulty to read it: Nat, I'm sorry to leave like this, but I need some time on my own to try to sort out my thoughts. It's as much the difficulty of adjusting to the knowledge that I'm 650 years out of my time as anything. I'll be in touch in a day or two. Sorry about your window. Love, Anastasia Nat found the words comforting, up to a point. But now her memories were back, Anastasia must realise the risk she ran from the Thothmes Society. How could she have been so reckless? Nat looked in the wardrobe, and found that Anastasia had taken a long overcoat and a rain-hat. Dressed like that, in the dark and the rain, she might manage to avoid drawing any attention to herself, especially since few people would be on the streets. That was so long as no-one looked at her feet, for there was no way that she could wear shoes. She hadn't taken her diary or the material she had accumulated when trying to investigate her past. Now that her memory had returned, presumably she no longer felt that she needed it.
