As the rain ceased, Edgar Hawkings decided to get up and get out of the church he had entered earlier. Having already been confronted by Donel [12676] and Sariel [12922] following the incident on the plane after landing at LaGuardia [12656], he was quite eager not to stick around in one place in case someone else found him.
I've learned too many things today. As if it wasn't bad enough having to run and hide throughout the entire British Isles for the last year because of all these bloody higher beings looking for my father. Look at all these New Yorkers going about their business. Talking, laughing, living their lives like there's absolutely nothing out of sorts. Right now, not one single human being in this metropolis knows the imminent danger they're all in. And I don't mean just New York City; the entire planet is in danger. Do I have to get to my father before 'they' do? It sure feels like it. Maybe he'll have some answers. And maybe I won't call him a fucking prat after he gets done offering his excuses on why he abandoned his role in the Second War. Those angels and messengers looking for him? They're willing to reduce this entire world into a barren wasteland to find him and to kill him. And again, not one human being knows this. They think the only wars being fought are between rogue nations thousands of miles away, or this bloody "war on terrorism" that's been waged since that morning when three out of four hijacked jet airliners were used to crash into American landmarks. How much did you accomplish, Mr. Bush? What about you, Mr. Blair, what do you have to say? ...forget all that now. I need to find my father. Chamuel, you and your favorite son are going to have quite a chat when we meet again...
Unknown to Edgar, or anyone else who had encountered him since his plane landed earlier, or to anybody who's busy searching the Big Apple for him, there are people hunting for him right now. They're not angels from a higher plane of existence. But they're really not the kind of people who Edgar wanted to deal with right now. Almost immediately after Edgar escaped the taxiing airplane, the airport went into crisis mode. New York City police officers, FBI members, paramedics, and other armed security forces mobilized. The woman brandishing the gun on the plane, one Josette Tracey Winthrop, was overpowered by several passengers and pinned down to the aisle floor while she screamed bloody murder. She was quickly taken into custody once the authorities stormed the plane. While Winthrop's one victim was treated at the scene for his injuries (not life threatening, thank god), the blown hatch was quickly notified. Several passengers were interrogated on the spot. They all gave somewhat conflicted stories, but they all seemed to suggest the same thing: Winthrop might have had an accomplice who fled as soon as the situation got out of hand. Never mind that Josette Winthrop's motivation or reasoning for shooting two people at the end of a trans-Atlantic flight had yet to be ascertained. The authorities quickly got to work. Within minutes after checking passenger databases and conducting a head count in the cabin of the plane (to the chagrin of impatient passengers who just wanted to get the hell out of there and go home or to their hotels), they had found their missing passenger: one Edgar Hawkings from England. Moments after that revelation, more critical information came up: HAWKINGS, EDGAR: HAS FILED NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS WITH LOCAL POLICE DEPARTMENTS THROUGHOUT UK CLAIMING TO BE "HUNTED" BY "ANGELS" FOR A ONE-YEAR PERIOD. HAWKINGS' FATHER, CHAMUEL, SUSPECTED OF HAVING NUMEROUS LINKS TO EXTREME RELIGIOUS CULTS OR TERRORIST SECTS. BOTH ARE CONSIDERED VERY DANGEROUS. So, there's that. Following the obligatory news conference with local, national, and international journalists, the FBI members regrouped in a private room deep within the bowels of the airport. The Hawkings weren't your run of the mill criminals or terrorists, mind you. But thanks to some behind-the-scenes investigations that had been ongoing even before Edgar decided to flee to the United States, key figures within the United States government did know about why he was being pursued, and what Chamuel had done, even if they found some of it to be pretty far fetched. So, they assigned their best man for the job: a former private detective named John Thessamar [15529]. He had extensive experience with the weird, the supernatural, and the unexplained. And if the government was really preparing to interfere in a holy war between angels and demons, they needed someone who could handle it without getting too messy. Still, like Edgar had mused as he departed the church, no average human being really knew what the stakes were, or how much danger they were really in. After being briefed, Thessamar accepted his new assignment, and departed LaGuardia. His black luxury car contained Edgar's abandoned luggage in the trunk for evidence as it sped on the expressway headed for Manhattan Island...
