Most would say that it is intrinsic to the nature of a demon to hate
God. In many cases, this assertation would be grossly incorrect. In fact, the majority of demons love God very much. You see, every demon was once in grace, an Angel. At the core of every Angel is a deep seated love of their creator. It is what forms the first part of what they are. This does not change when one Falls. Not universally, at least. Though many who are still in grace would like to think the first war, started by the rebellion of Sammael, the Morningstar, he who is called Lucifer, was started out of hate. The truth is somewhat more difficult to handle. The easiest way to put it was to state the thing which caused the schism. Humanity. It is said in the Qur'an, the holy text of Islam, that there came a time when God presented Adam to the Host of Heaven. He then bade his Angels to prostrate themselves before Adam, but one did not. This was Iblis, which is another name for Sammael. The First War was not started out of hate, it was started out of love, a love of God so great that it could not accept that He could value another of his creations over the Angels. It is said that this is the same reason Gabriel started the Second War. The idea that God could forgive humanity through the sending of his Word incarnate was unbearable to God's Messenger. This, however, is only said in nervous whispers. The fate of the Fallen is a complicated one as well. It would be easy to paint Hell as physical torture, and certainly in some parts of it, that may be true. You're able to find the stereotypical brimstone, spikes, generally anything you don't like is present. However, to the Fallen, this is nothing more than a distraction, a diversion which they themselves have created to prevent themselves from dwelling on the true torture of Hell. Hell exists in a realm called the Qlippot. The Qlippot is, in simplest terms, the place things go when they cease to be. Bit by bit as the new replaces the old on Earth, the old goes spiralling into the Qlippot, forming burned out husks of entire bygone eras. It is an entire universe of castoffs. It is as removed from God as one can get. Call it Sheol, call it Gehenna, call it Tarterus, it doesn't really matter. Hell is what it is, and the true torture of it for the demons is being removed from God's sight. When one goes on to consider the actions of the Fallen in the present day, the waters are muddied even further, as not even the demons can agree on their motivations. Some believe they work to bring things back to the way it was, back when they were loved best. Some are like animals caught in a trap, thrashing about, and willing to destroy the world in order to free themselves. There is a theory amongst this camp that says if God can be proved wrong, then the world will unravel and they will return to grace. And Lucifer, the great Adversary? None can say for sure what he thinks, but those few who gain entrance to his chambers could swear that there is a wistful, almost penitent look on his face... As much as Azazel hated to admit it, he loved the talking monkeys presently infesting the Earth. They had so much potential. For some reason, they had been granted free will; they had the power to choose. In a demon, doing wrong was still going against their very nature. It hurt. Humans, though, had no such problems. They could perform acts of goodness that would make the highest of the Elohim weep, but there was something more. They could be more evil than a demon could even dream. Every last one of them that chose to do wrong was a nail in the universe's coffin. His latest prospect, though, was especially delicious. During the First War, he'd felt the burning sword of one of the greatest warriors of Heaven, Chamuel, as he'd been cast out. Now Chamuel had become disillusioned with the Second War, and defected, a tempting prospect in and of itself, but not his present target. What pleased him most of all was the one he was pursuing, Chamuel's son. The rat bastard had screwed up royally this time, and produced one of the Nephilim. With a powerful being like that on his side, Azazel mused, the scales might well tip in Hell's favor... Edgar sat for the longest time, pondering his encounter with Sariel when...
