Edgar ran out of the church to find out what had happened. He saw that the
large window of a nearby store had been smashed. Two men were standing on
the sidewalk in front of it, arguing loudly. Some boys, streetball sticks
in their hands, skulked nearby. Edgar was happy to see that whatever it
was that had happened, it had nothing to do with him. But when he turned
around to reenter the church he saw that the way was blocked by a crowd of
onlookers. Edgar took a step forward, but something made him stop.
Something about the way that group of people looked, something in their
eyes. Edgar suddenly felt very afraid and exposed. But he didn't dare go
through that throng of strangers to reach the safety of the church. So he
did the only thing he could think of, he turned around and quickly walked
away.
"I want him," the gaunt man repeated calmly. The other two people in the room trembled. The boss was never more dangerous than when he was calm. "Now, the people who are after him are hardcore. At best I'd say that we only have 48 hours to find him and take him. I expect you to do your best. Don't disappoint me." "But what if we run into them?" Johnny asked. "I'd suggest you run, although I don't think you'd get very far," their boss replied. "Still, that's the least of your worries. In fact, don't waste time worrying about them at all. Instead, worry about me." The two men quickly left the room, leaving behind the man they knew only as Mr.Glover. He had told them what he wanted and they knew better than to believe he would be satisfied with anything less. And if anything went wrong, it would be they who paid the price. Alone in the room, Mr.Glover turned toward an odd display of christmas ornaments. Each hung from a coarse thread of red yarn, nailed to a 2x4 that crossed the length of the room. Tacky christmas tree lights were wrapped around the long plank from end to end, blinking softly in the subdued darkness. The way the green vines of wire tangled about each other, sharp points of light sprouting haphazardly here and there and everywhere, brought to mind the thorned creepers of Mr.Glover's native country. And that pleased him. "Gabriel, Chamuel, Azazel, and all the rest of you," he spoke softly to himself, "your pride and arrogance has always been your undoing. You walk this world as if you are above it. Or below it, depending on the case. But your are not a part of it. Not like me. This is my world, and that gives me all the advantage I need."
