Fred woke up to find a woman standing over him. Oddly enough, she was not
strikingly beautiful. She had brown hair, and was wearing glasses. They
seemed much more refined than the crude spectacles that had recently been
invented. She was wearing clothing of a sort Fred had never seen. "Where... where am I?" asked Fred. "Who are you? What happened?" "To answer your questions in order," said the woman, "you are in my house in Soccoro, New Mexico, in the United States of America. I'm Betty Ragan. And I wish I knew." "Where is this United States of America in relation to the Great Kingdom of Allaria? I have never heard of it," said Fred. "Well," said Ragan, "this is going to take a lot of explaining... the Great Kingdom is in an alternate universe. In this universe, you are a fictional character in a story that many people wrote for, including me. Although to tell the truth, I didn't write much about you, mostly about other characters." Fred was confused. "What do you mean alternate universe? And how can I be fictional? I'm here, right?"
